Haikou is the northern gateway of the Hainan free trade port and the provincial capital's core hub, comprising the Xiuying, Macun and Xinhai areas.

Container throughput reached 1.660 million TEU in 2024, up 14.9%, split almost evenly between 831,000 TEU inbound and 829,000 TEU outbound, with cargo throughput around 120 million tonnes. The port carries both Hainan's foreign trade and the island's supply traffic.

Xiuying is the container and passenger ro-ro core, Macun handles break-bulk and energy, and Xinhai is dedicated to cross-strait ferries. Channels and terminals continue to be upgraded to serve Qiongzhou Strait traffic.

At the northern tip of Hainan island, ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait connect Guangdong's Hai'an and Zhanjiang ports, making this the key link between the Hainan free trade port and the mainland.

Serves biopharmaceuticals, tropical agricultural processing, tourism goods and duty-free trade across Haikou and the province, benefiting from free trade port policies including zero tariffs and low tax rates.
Primarily an island supply port. Rarely the right choice for used vehicle exports, since almost all Chinese dealer and auction supply sits on the mainland.
