Key figures (2024)
Overview
Ningbo-Zhoushan is the world's largest port by cargo tonnage and a top-three container hub, serving the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta.
Export role and throughput
Cargo throughput reached 1.377-1.38 billion tonnes in 2024, first worldwide for the 16th year running, alongside 39.30 million TEU of container traffic. Ningbo customs district ranked fifth nationally by import-export value, handling 5.80% of China's total, which makes the port a major consolidation and export point.
Infrastructure and berths
The port spans the Ningbo and Zhoushan areas with deep-water terminals at Jintang, Chuanshan, Beilun, Daxie, Meishan and Yangshan phase II. Berths accept ultra-large container ships and 300,000-tonne bulk carriers, supported by specialised crude oil, iron ore and LNG facilities and a developed sea-rail network.
Location and inland connectivity
The hinterland covers all of Zhejiang and extends into the Yangtze Delta, the middle and upper Yangtze and central-western China. Sea-rail services link the Yiwu "Yixin'ou" China-Europe train, making this the southern outlet for central and western cargo.
Surrounding industry clusters
Serves the Ningbo-Zhoushan petrochemical, auto parts, mould-making, light industry and textile clusters, plus Yiwu small commodities, Shaoxing textiles and Wenzhou hardware.
Very strong container sailing frequency close to Shanghai's, making it a practical alternative for containerised used car shipments from Zhejiang and southern Jiangsu. RoRo services are fewer than at Shanghai, so confirm the loading method before quoting.
Figures are for 2024 unless noted, compiled from China's Ministry of Transport, provincial and municipal authorities, and port group disclosures. Values marked approx. are industry estimates.
