Overview
Shantou is the principal port of eastern Guangdong and a designated regional strong port on the southeast coast, with Guang'ao as its deep-water core.
Export role and throughput
Container traffic is estimated at about 2.2 million TEU for 2024 with cargo throughput around 60 million tonnes. Exports reflect eastern Guangdong specialities such as toys, apparel, ceramics and electronics, and domestic-trade boxes also account for a significant share.

Guang'ao is the deep-water container area able to work large container vessels, backed by a dedicated port rail link and port-side logistics parks. China Merchants Group has positioned it explicitly as a regional strong port on the southeast coast.
Location and inland connectivity
On the eastern Guangdong coast at the mouths of the Han and Rong rivers, the Shanfen expressway and Xiamen-Shenzhen railway connect eastern Guangdong with southwestern Fujian, serving Shantou, Chaozhou, Jieyang, Meizhou and southern Jiangxi.
Surrounding industry clusters
Serves Shantou toys, textiles and apparel, ceramics, food and electronics, a concentrated light-industrial base in eastern Guangdong. Hosts the Shantou overseas Chinese economic and cultural cooperation pilot zone.
Relevant for eastern Guangdong exporters, saving a 300 km haul to Shenzhen, though sailing frequency to Africa, Europe and the Middle East is materially lower.
