Overview

Yantai is a member of the integrated Shandong port group with particular strength in ro-ro traffic and cold chain across northeast Asia.

Export role and throughput

The port handled 451 million tonnes of cargo and 5.09 million TEU in 2024, records across its main indicators. Foreign-trade cargo centres on grain, ore, fertiliser and ro-ro vehicles, and Yantai is a major northern Chinese port for passenger ro-ro and trade with South Korea.

Infrastructure and berths

The Zhifu, West Port, Longkou and Penglai areas hold deep-water container and bulk berths with a notably strong ro-ro terminal system. West Port adds large general berths, a crude oil terminal and an LNG receiving station.

Location and inland connectivity

At the northern edge of the Shandong peninsula where the Yellow and Bohai seas meet, ro-ro services link Dalian and sea-rail intermodal traffic reaches central and western China. The port also serves as a hub on China-Africa trade lanes.

Surrounding industry clusters

Serves Yantai fruit and agricultural exports, auto parts, machinery, non-ferrous metals and chemicals, with bulk commodity processing and cold-chain logistics at the port. Hosts a comprehensive bonded zone and the Yantai free-trade area.

What this means for used car buyers

Has substantial vehicle terminal capacity and is a practical choice for northern Shandong exporters shipping to Korea and Japan. Qingdao remains stronger for long-haul deep-sea services and export processing.
