Overview
Zhuhai is a deep-water port on the western side of the Greater Bay Area, centred on the Gaolan area, and a southern Chinese hub for dry bulk and petrochemicals.
Export role and throughput
The port handled roughly 130 million tonnes and an estimated 1.5 million TEU in 2024. Gaolan is a national first-class open port holding the largest liquid chemical berths in the Pearl River Delta, with foreign trade weighted toward petrochemicals, mineral building materials and coal.
Infrastructure and berths
Gaolan has a 150,000-tonne main channel with scope for 300,000-tonne petrochemical berths and sits close to the international Daxi channel. Facilities cover containers, dry bulk, liquid chemicals and oil and gas, backed by port-side warehousing parks.
Location and inland connectivity
On the western shore of the Pearl River estuary next to Macau, the Xijiang inland waterway reaches Zhaoqing, Foshan and Jiangmen while expressways and rail run into the port, serving the western delta and western Guangdong.
Surrounding industry clusters
Serves the Zhuhai-Jiangmen-Zhongshan petrochemical, fine chemical, equipment manufacturing and new-energy materials belt, with heavy industry and bonded logistics at Gaolan. Operates alongside the Zhuhai free-trade area.
A genuine deep-water alternative for Foshan, Jiangmen and Zhongshan WPC producers that avoids the Nansha road congestion, though container sailings are far fewer than at Shenzhen or Guangzhou.
