Overview

Foshan is the largest inland river port in the Pearl River Delta and the manufacturing logistics hub of the western Greater Bay Area, centred on the Shunde, Sanshui and Gaoming areas.

Export role and throughput

Cargo throughput reached 80.5387 million tonnes in the first nine months of 2024, up 9.73%, with container volume estimated at 3-4 million TEU. This makes Foshan the largest river container port on the western side of the delta, handling ceramics, home appliances and building materials for export.

Infrastructure and berths

Predominantly river terminals, using the Xijiang waterway to reach the deep-water ports of Zhuhai Gaolan and Guangzhou Nansha. The port has container, break-bulk and ro-ro berths and is the key feeder node on the delta's western shore.

Location and inland connectivity

In the heart of the Pearl River Delta where the Xijiang and Beijiang meet, inland waterways run directly to coastal deep-water ports and the expressway network is dense. The port serves Foshan, Zhaoqing, Jiangmen, Zhongshan and western Guangdong.

Surrounding industry clusters

Serves Foshan ceramics, home appliances (Midea, Galanz), furniture, aluminium profiles, textiles and equipment manufacturing, functioning as the core river terminal group for shipping "made in Foshan" worldwide.

What this means for WPC buyers

Directly relevant: Foshan and Nanhai host a large share of China's WPC wall panel and decking capacity. Note that cargo barges to Nansha or Gaolan for deep-sea loading, which adds one to three days versus trucking straight to Nansha.

Figures are for 2024 unless noted, compiled from China's Ministry of Transport, provincial and municipal authorities, and port group disclosures. Values marked approx. are industry estimates.
