Key figures (2024)

  • Container throughputapprox. 2.5 million TEU (est.)
  • Cargo throughputapprox. 200 million tonnes

Overview

Chongqing is the largest port group on the upper Yangtze, the origin of the China-Europe (Yuxinou) rail service and the core of the upper-Yangtze shipping centre.

Export role and throughput

Container throughput is estimated at about 2.5 million TEU for 2024 with cargo throughput around 200 million tonnes, the largest container volume on the upper Yangtze. Foreign trade centres on electronics, vehicles and parts, machinery and chemicals, moving by a combination of China-Europe rail and the Yangtze waterway.

Infrastructure and berths

Guoyuan is the core hub and one of China's largest inland multimodal ports, with Cuntan being redeveloped and Fuling and Wanzhou in support. Guoyuan combines container, break-bulk and ro-ro handling with dedicated rail lines and bonded logistics.

Location and inland connectivity

At the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Chongqing is the starting point of the Yuxinou train and the head of the Yangtze waterway, linking the Yangtze economic belt with the Belt and Road. It serves Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and the upper Yangtze, and is a node on the New Western Land-Sea Corridor.

Surrounding industry clusters

Serves Chongqing electronics (the notebook supply chain), automotive (Changan, Seres), equipment manufacturing, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and agricultural processing, with port-side industry across the Chengdu-Chongqing twin-city economic circle.

What this means for WPC buyers

Rail to Europe can beat ocean freight on transit time for upper-Yangtze producers, though at higher cost per container; ocean cargo faces a long river leg to Shanghai.

Figures are for 2024 unless noted, compiled from China's Ministry of Transport, provincial and municipal authorities, and port group disclosures. Values marked approx. are industry estimates.
