Overview

Nanjing is a major Yangtze container transfer port and the comprehensive hub for Jiangsu's capital, reaching the Anhui river corridor and the upper Yangtze.

Export role and throughput

Container throughput reached a record 3.71 million TEU in 2024, up 7.2%, with cargo throughput around 260 million tonnes. Nanjing is among the largest container ports on the Yangtze, with foreign trade weighted toward short-sea services and domestic transfer.

Infrastructure and berths

The Longtan, Xinshengwei and Jiangbei areas serve the port, with Longtan the container core able to work large river container ships. Specialised break-bulk, ro-ro and chemical berths are supported by rail running directly into the terminal.

Location and inland connectivity

On the lower Yangtze, the port ties the river channel to the Shanghai-Nanjing rail and road corridridors, reaching the Nanjing metropolitan area, all of Jiangsu and Anhui's river cities.

Surrounding industry clusters

Serves Nanjing electronics, petrochemicals, automotive, steel and pharmaceuticals plus the Jiangsu-Anhui riverside belt, with equipment manufacturing and chemicals at the port. Hosts the Longtan bonded zone and the Nanjing free-trade area.

What this means for WPC buyers

Useful for Anhui and western Jiangsu producers as a river leg, but deep-sea cargo transfers downstream; compare total transit against trucking to Taicang or Shanghai.

Figures are for 2024 unless noted, compiled from China's Ministry of Transport, provincial and municipal authorities, and port group disclosures. Values marked approx. are industry estimates.
