Key figures (2024)
Overview
Dalian is the core port of the Northeast Asia International Shipping Centre and one of the two anchors of Liaoning Port Group.
Export role and throughput
Dalian is the northeast's largest foreign-trade container hub, handling roughly 240 million tonnes and about 5 million TEU in 2024. Its share of foreign-trade boxes is higher than Yingkou's, serving high-end manufacturing, petrochemicals and regional exports.
Infrastructure and berths
The Dayaowan and Dalianwan areas form the core, with Dayaowan the container centre able to work ultra-large container ships. The port adds large petrochemical berths, grain terminals, iron ore berths and passenger ro-ro facilities, with rail running directly into the terminals.
Location and inland connectivity
At the southern tip of the Liaodong peninsula where the Yellow and Bohai seas meet, Dalian has dense Japan and Korea services and sits on Northeast Asia-Europe trade routes, reaching the three northeastern provinces via the Harbin-Dalian railway.
Surrounding industry clusters
Serves Dalian petrochemicals, equipment manufacturing, shipbuilding and offshore engineering, electronics and software, plus regional steel, automotive and grain trade. Hosts the Dayaowan comprehensive bonded zone in the Dalian free-trade area.
The best foreign-trade option in the northeast. Relevant mainly to producers north of Beijing, since most Chinese WPC capacity sits much further south.
