Key figures (2024)
Overview
Rizhao is a national dry-bulk hub and an important member of the integrated Shandong port group.
Export role and throughput
Cargo throughput reached 552 million tonnes in 2024, sixth among China's coastal ports, with nine commodities each above 10 million tonnes and six ranking first nationally. Container volume is around 6 million TEU including foreign-trade boxes, but the port's strength is bulk ore, coal and crude.
Infrastructure and berths
The Shijiu and Lanshan areas hold large iron ore, coal, crude oil and container berths able to take ultra-large bulk carriers, with extensive automated handling and conveyor systems.
Location and inland connectivity
On the southern flank of the Shandong peninsula on the west coast of the Yellow Sea, the port connects to the Wari heavy-haul coal railway and serves Shandong, Henan and central Shandong as a national energy and bulk commodity corridor.
Surrounding industry clusters
Serves Rizhao and southern Shandong steel (Rizhao Steel), grain and oil processing, shipbuilding and energy, with a comprehensive bonded zone and bulk commodity trading and storage centre.
Bulk-oriented rather than container-oriented. Shandong WPC producers in Linyi and Yishui are close by, but Qingdao usually offers better container sailing options.
Figures are for 2024 unless noted, compiled from China's Ministry of Transport, provincial and municipal authorities, and port group disclosures. Values marked approx. are industry estimates.
