Overview

Nantong is the lower Yangtze sea gateway and part of the northern wing of the Shanghai International Shipping Centre, acting as a river container transfer hub.

Export role and throughput

One of the largest comprehensive ports on the lower Yangtze, Nantong handled about 260 million tonnes and an estimated 2 million TEU in 2024. Traffic is weighted toward domestic river trade and short-sea services, making the port a collection and distribution centre for the northern Yangtze Delta.

Infrastructure and berths

Areas along the river include Tonghai, Tiansheng, Rugao and Yangkou, with large general bulk and container berths and Tonghai as the container core. The deep Yangtze channel gives direct river-sea connections with Shanghai's Yangshan terminals.

Location and inland connectivity

On the north bank of the lower Yangtze across the river from Shanghai and Suzhou, the port links northern and central Jiangsu via the Tongjing railway, expressways and inland waterways, reaching the middle and upper Yangtze.

Surrounding industry clusters

Serves Nantong textiles, shipbuilding and offshore engineering, electronics, machinery and chemicals, with equipment manufacturing and new materials at the port. Hosts a comprehensive bonded zone and the Tongzhou Bay new outlet development.

What this means for WPC buyers

Convenient for central Jiangsu plants, but most deep-sea WPC cargo still transfers through Shanghai; treat it as a feeder rather than a loading port.

Figures are for 2024 unless noted, compiled from China's Ministry of Transport, provincial and municipal authorities, and port group disclosures. Values marked approx. are industry estimates.
