Overview

Zhanjiang is a southern Chinese hub for dry bulk and petrochemicals, the main sea outlet for the southwest, and the meeting point of the Greater Bay Area, Beibu Gulf and Hainan.

Export role and throughput

Zhanjiang Port Group handled 107 million tonnes and 1.32 million TEU in 2024, up 3.6% to a record. Foreign trade is dominated by iron ore, crude oil, coal and grain, making this one of the largest iron ore discharge ports in southern China.

Infrastructure and berths

Baoman is the container core while Xiashan, Diaoshun and Donghai Island handle bulk and petrochemicals. The port has a 300,000-tonne deep channel plus large ore and crude terminals, with Baoman container phase II under construction and dedicated rail lines running into the port.

Location and inland connectivity

On the northeastern Leizhou peninsula next to the Beibu Gulf, the Limao and Luomao railways reach the southwest, placing the port on the south China to southwest land-sea corridor and linking the Beibu Gulf with the Hainan free trade port.

Surrounding industry clusters

Serves Zhanjiang steel (Baosteel's Zhanjiang base), petrochemicals (Zhongke Refinery, the BASF integrated site) and paper making, with strong port-side heavy industry. Combines a comprehensive bonded zone with free-trade area measures.

What this means for WPC buyers

Bulk and project cargo oriented. Container choice is limited, so WPC producers in western Guangdong usually route through Nansha or Shenzhen instead.

Figures are for 2024 unless noted, compiled from China's Ministry of Transport, provincial and municipal authorities, and port group disclosures. Values marked approx. are industry estimates.
