Overview

Shenzhen is southern China's container hub and the main foreign-trade port for the Greater Bay Area, operating in tandem with Hong Kong.

Export role and throughput

Terminals under Shenzhen Port Group handled 17.365 million TEU in 2024, up about 7% to a record high, with Yantian the core foreign-trade cluster. Counting the whole port area, Shenzhen sits in the global top five to six, and export boxes make up an unusually high share of its traffic.

Infrastructure and berths

Yantian, Shekou, Chiwan and Dachan Bay areas provide numerous deep-water berths for ultra-large vessels, with automated and semi-automated terminals plus cold-chain and dangerous-goods handling, all tied into road, river and rail feeder systems.

Location and inland connectivity

Covers the eastern Pearl River Delta and the Greater Bay Area, reaching inland via the Pingyan and Pingnan rail links. The port is a required call on most global alliance networks.

Surrounding industry clusters

Serves high-value export manufacturing across Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta: electronics, consumer devices, communications equipment, drones and automotive electronics.

What this means for WPC buyers

Best sailing frequency in south China. For WPC suppliers in Dongguan, Huizhou and eastern Shenzhen the inland haul is usually under 60 km.
