Overview

Taicang, the main area of Suzhou Port, is the Yangtze estuary gateway and the container transfer core for Suzhou and Yangtze Delta manufacturing.

Export role and throughput

Suzhou Port passed 10 million TEU in 2024 with Taicang carrying the bulk of that volume, making it the largest container port on the Yangtze. It serves one of China's densest export-oriented manufacturing regions and has substantial foreign-trade transfer capacity.

Infrastructure and berths

Taicang has deep-water river berths able to work large container ships on short-sea services, supported by inland feeder, rail and bonded logistics facilities, and works closely with Shanghai Port via the deep Yangtze channel.

Location and inland connectivity

Sitting on the south bank of the Yangtze estuary next to Shanghai, the port is the direct junction between the Yangtze waterway and the Shanghai International Shipping Centre, with a dedicated rail link to the Beijing-Shanghai line. It reaches Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Shanghai and the middle and upper Yangtze.

Surrounding industry clusters

Serves one of China's strongest manufacturing groupings: electronics, auto parts, equipment, textiles and biopharmaceuticals. The Taicang comprehensive bonded zone operates alongside the Shanghai free-trade zone.

What this means for WPC buyers

Convenient for Jiangsu and Anhui WPC plants, though most deep-sea cargo still transfers at Shanghai, so allow extra transit time versus loading at Yangshan.

Figures are for 2024 unless noted, compiled from China's Ministry of Transport, provincial and municipal authorities, and port group disclosures. Values marked approx. are industry estimates.
