Key figures (2024)
Overview
Wuhan is the largest container port on the middle and upper Yangtze and the core of the middle-Yangtze shipping centre, with Yangluo as its signature area.
Export role and throughput
Container throughput passed 3.5 million TEU in 2024, first on the middle and upper Yangtze, including 231,600 TEU of rail-water intermodal traffic that earned national demonstration status for a second year. Cargo throughput was around 160 million tonnes, making Wuhan the region's transfer and multimodal hub.
Infrastructure and berths
Yangluo is the core container area, supported by Huashan, Jinkou and Zhuankou. The port handles large river fleets and offers water, rail, road and air multimodal connections, with the Yangluo bonded zone and Wuhan free-trade area alongside.
Location and inland connectivity
Where the middle Yangtze meets the Han River, the Beijing-Guangzhou railway crosses the Yangtze waterway and the Han-Europe block train runs directly to Europe. The port serves the Wuhan cluster, all of Hubei, and Hunan, Henan and Jiangxi.
Surrounding industry clusters
Serves Wuhan optoelectronics and information, automotive and parts, steel, equipment manufacturing, biopharmaceuticals and food processing, drawing on the city's position as a national transport crossroads.
The main consolidation point for central China. Cargo still transfers to Shanghai or Ningbo for deep-sea loading, so add roughly a week versus a coastal factory.
Figures are for 2024 unless noted, compiled from China's Ministry of Transport, provincial and municipal authorities, and port group disclosures. Values marked approx. are industry estimates.
